Genshin Impact’s miHoYo Rebrands as HoYoverse for Global Expansion

Here's why Genshin Impact has an all new loading screen.

miHoYo rebrands to HoYoverse
Official HoYoverse Rebranding

When you launched Genshin Impact after the Version 2.5 maintenance, were you greeted by a completely unfamiliar loading screen? You weren’t the only one. Genshin Impact’s entire player base saw a completely new logo that replaced ‘miHoYo’ with ‘HoYoverse’.  Genshin Impact’s popularity skyrocketed after its release in 2020. The action packed open-world RPG captured hearts across the globe. It established itself practically as a monopoly in the market.

The animation, graphics, storylines and every other aspect of the game work in tandem to deliver an incredibly cinematic experience to players. miHoYo, the game’s developer, takes practically all the credit for its massive growth.

Gacha fans all over the world are more than familiar with miHoYo’s ‘Tech Otakus Save The World’. Based out of China, this popular video game developer has also produced various games like Honkai Impact 3 and Tears of Themis. Genshin Impact truly established them as a reputed video game developer. However, their other games have found international success as well.

The Story Behind the HoYoverse Rebranding

Ultimately, miHoYo decided to rebrand as HoYoverse to cater to its growing international audience. This new brand aims to deliver an immersive virtual world experience to players globally. HoYoverse hopes to integrate games, anime, manga, light novels and much more to provide an all-round package to its users.

According to a statement from its CEO, Haoyu Cai, they will “continue to focus on long-term operation strategies, consistent technical research, and innovation in a variety of fields, including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and pipeline construction, to ensure that sufficient content is created to meet the expectations of players worldwide for a virtual world experience.”

What Does This Mean for the Players?

This move will not significantly affect the player base. HoYoverse aims to expand operations outside China by setting up offices in Montreal, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul. Within China, it seems like miHoYo will continue to run the show. Since the brands are now two separate entities, Chinese censorship may not necessarily apply to HoYoverse productions.

Recent censorship prompted the release of new character outfit designs for Mona, Jean, Amber and Rosaria. There was also criticism about overly ‘feminine’ male characters in the game by the CCP. Perhaps HoYoverse will retain creative freedom and remain immune to any such cases in the future.
