Fall Guys is a hugely popular platformer/battle-royale hybrid. Developed by UK-based developer Mediatonic. Typical of Battle Royale games, there are several rounds in which players attain progress. Until eventually the last remaining player is crowned the winner.
The game features a huge variety of mini-games, each one randomly selected. This lends the game a “game show” like feel. While the influence of shows like Takeshi’s Castle, wipeout and It’s a Knockout is obvious. The game also takes a cue from schoolyard games like “Tag, you’re it!”
Fall Guys Gameplay:
Players take on the role of characters that look like jellybeans. And can perform a variety of moves, like climbing/grabbing other players, jumping over obstacles, and even diving. There is an in-game currency system referred to as “Kudos”. Which can be used to buy nameplates, nametags, cosmetics, faceplates, and an assortment of colored costumes. Micro-transactions feature in the form of show bucks (similar to Fortnite’s v-bucks) which you can spend on premium content.
A huge roster of character skins from different franchises is available. Industry staples like Gordon Freeman from Half-life, P-Body from Portal 2, Doomguy from Doom, Sonic and Knuckles, Ratchet and Clank, and Sackboy from Little Big Planet among others. New seasons are being added every few months. With each one bearing a specific theme.
Fall Guys received positive reviews. Critics praised the gameplay and bright colorful graphics. Calling it riotous fun. Drawing favorable comparisons to Mario Party and Super Monkey Ball. The physics-based movement system was seen as a double-edged sword though. With the potential to frustrate. It did however set it apart from precision platformers that feature keyframe animation.
A big facet of the game is comic relief. Watching your characters bungle around and “falling over themselves”, is as lead game designer Joe Walsh puts it pretty funny. It is also noteworthy for including mostly family-friendly elements. In a landscape dotted with games where shooting and fighting are often the only way to go.
