Immortals Fenyx Rising is a third-person open world action adventure game. Developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the team behind the well-received Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Curiously enough, the idea for the game came about- when a bug was discovered in AC:Odyssey. Which turned the human crew’s player models into one-eyed cyclops monsters! This was rather convenient. As they’d already made a game based on Greek mythology. And the setting was thought to be a perfect fit. Owing to the success of AC:Odyssey, the project was greenlit.
Initially the game was titled ‘Gods and Monsters’. But due to a copyright trademark issue with Monster Energy Drinks, was later renamed to avoid confusion. Apparently the idea to have the entire plot narrated by Prometheus and Zeus was mostly a last minute decision.
Breath of the wild Clone
Immortals- Fenyx Rising is set in the fictional world of ‘Golden Isle’. The enemies range from Minotaurs, Cyclops, Gorgons and Griffins. Upon arriving the player finds that all the inhabitants have been turned to stone. Even though the original was praised for its humor, story, combat, progression systems and soundtrack; Nevertheless many critics found the game to be too derivative. Specifically of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild and AC:Odyssey.
Gameplay:
It’s not clear what direction the game will take. But the base game is a mix of open-world exploration, combat and platforming/traversal challenges. There are also side-quests to complete and optional puzzles to solve. Combat is fairly basic with two different melee attacks. Light Sword attacks that are swift but dont really pack a punch. To Heavy Axe attacks which are much slower but do more damage. There’s a stamina bar which will drain on sustaining extensive damage. So players will have to manage it.
Spinoff:
What was initially thought to be a full fledged sequel, has been leaked by sources to be a spinoff. With a Hawaian Polynesian theme. According to Giant bomb journalist Jeff Grubb, it will, atleast visually, be less of a “copy of breath of the wild”. The project is currently in pre-production. He also claims to have seen concept art for it. Release dates are tentative, but should land somewhere around 2025. That’s still a fair way off though, and some fear Ubisoft might cancel the spin-off entirely. If a string of recent delays and cancellations are any indication to go by.
