Rise of the Ronin: Beginners Guide 2024 – Essential Tips to Conquer Feudal Japan

Rise of the Ronin is an immersive, action-packed open-world adventure set in a tumultuous period of Japanese history. As a Ronin, a masterless samurai, you have the freedom to shape your destiny in a world torn by conflict. If you’re just beginning your journey, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.  This beginner’s guide will arm you with the essential tips and strategies to help you find your footing and thrive in this dangerous, yet beautiful, world.

Rise of the Ronin: Key Areas to Focus

  1. Follow the Main Story (at first): While the open-world beckons, stick to the main story missions until you reach Yokohama. This unlocks key features like the Photography Studio and Training Dojo, letting you access new rewards and ways to play.
  2. Get Your Horse ASAP: In  “The Bridge to Yokohama” mission, liberate Honmoku. Near a Veiled Edge Banner, you’ll find a dead rider by a horse. Take the Horse Flute –  your first free mount for easy travel. If you miss it, look for similar encounters in your explorations.

  3. Spare a Bandit, Gain an Ally:  Spare Gonzo, the bandit chief in  “The Bridge to Yokohama.” Later, in the “The Bad Bunch” side quest, he’ll offer a powerful new combat style for your Odachi and become a valuable mission companion.
  4. Early Glider and Storehouse: Ask Gonzo what’s in it for you if you spare him. He’ll reveal a nearby storehouse. Whether you spare him or not, loot the chests inside,  and you’ll get the Glider after the mission. This grants a quick way back to Yokohama to try out your new aerial skills.
  5. Challenge Other Ronin: Look for wandering Ronin NPCs in Yokohama. Defeating them boosts your weapon skills and teaches you their techniques, expanding your combat repertoire.  Similarly, seek out bandit camps where you can rescue captured Ronin, enhancing your reputation and fighting force.
  6. Branching Combat Styles:  Unlock combat styles to become a well-rounded warrior. Some are tied to building bonds with allies through side quests. Others come from defeating specific Fugitives in each region. Seek out early targets like Genzui Kusaka, Shinsaku Takasugi, and Gonzo for powerful styles.
  7. Foraging for Survival: Collect every flower and plant you see! Craft Healing Elixirs from Red Nuts and Medicinal Herbs to stay alive in tough fights.  Toggle “Auto-Collect Items” in settings if gathering gets tedious.
  8. Expand Your Arsenal: Fight different enemy types to claim their unique weapons like Sabers, Greatswords, Oxtail blades, and Bayonets.  Defeat specific Fugitives to unlock new combat styles for these weapons, providing you incredible tactical flexibility.
  9. Gadget Guru: Complete Igashichi’s side quest “A Lucky Find Put to Use” for the Detector (see enemies through walls) and the Flame Pipe (a handy flamethrower!).  Keep bringing him books to unlock more accessory slots for powerful upgrades.
  10. Level Up that Glider: Find a tall windmill in Yokohama’s Kariba region. Complete the gliding training mission and give the reward book to Igashichi to unlock a major speed boost for your glider.
  11. Bonds are Strength: Clear Public Orders, find Veiled Edge Banners, and take down Fugitives in a region to raise your Bond Level. This reveals map icons and unlocks side quests.  Increase bonds with individual characters by doing their quests, agreeing with them in dialogue, and giving gifts for unique rewards and combat styles.
